Friday Hi-5 Features, 29 July 2011

by Lauren on July 29, 2011

Today, I stepped out of my comfort zone and decided to record my first ever vlog post. Thanks to Mike Langford and Amanda Nelson for providing all of their tips and tricks. As I mature with this format, I will definitely invest in some of the tools you listed in our Google+ thread. So, without any further ado….

Welcome to today’s Friday Hi-5 Features! Each week we will explore the best picks in the following categories: technology/tool; fiction book; non-fiction book; post of the week; and offline inspiration.

This week, a productivity theme was evident in all of the selections.

Technology/Tool

Metrotwit-a new Twitter client specifically for Windows that does not suck your computer’s resources like some other Twitter desktop clients.

Fiction Book

The Huger Games by Suzanne Collins – not your average sci-fi, but a tale of human survival. Dump those romance novel beach reads and check out this series for children and adults.

Non-Fiction Book

The Way We’re Working Isn’t Working: The Four Forgotten Needs That Energize Great Performance by Tony Schwartz – great reminders to live a healthy personal life to maintain and give our best professional performance. Take time to actually read the book and not listen to it on audiobook as I did. Broke all the rules!

Post of the Week

Proctor and Gamble Minimizes Management Meddling by Michael Schrage – check out this article profiling how technology is driving P&G to delayer from the top down to empower middle managers and get rid of hollow and micromanagement. Change management in action…read and answer what perspective you believe is better?

Offline Inspiration

The chatter this week seems to be about productivity in the midst of social media fatigue, as pointed out by Gini Dietrich. Take a page from my playbook and experiment with the Dr. Pepper 10-2-4 time management model. Want to know more? Watch the video…

When I asked the question on Google+ of what people found as offline inspiration, Rachel Happe answered, “It’s that time of year where the weather and time outside always inspires me – mostly to take a step back, breath, and not take everything so seriously.” What has recently inspired you offline?

Next week, tune in as I take another stab at a vlog post with the Hi-5 Features coming straight from EduWeb (where I will be speaking on The Nine Hats-and Counting-of a Community Manager).

Friday Features: Welcome to the Fifth Estate-A Review

May 27, 2011

The silver lining for being stuck in a airport for almost 14 hours is the time one has to catch-up on reading. Due to the storms, I found myself in Chicago, curled in a corner with my Nook reading Geoff Livingston’s latest book, Welcome to the Fifth Estate. One of the many challenges of social [...]

Zany: Tap Into Your Curiosity

March 26, 2010

Lately, I have taken for granted our ability to tap into our curiosity, embrace our imagination and think beyond our current norms. In the doldrums of the Twitter feed, many are often sucked into the activities of content regurgitation and knee jerk assumptions. Discovery is buried deep within the retweets and status updates; golden nuggets [...]

Zany: If you can’t be famous, be infamous

March 19, 2009

And so I am tonight. I would rather you hear it from me. So grab your tissue… No, you won't be sad at the telling of this story, but you will be howling with laughter so hard you will be crying. I have publicly stated that I am book smart, but I have gaps in [...]

Zany: "To thine own self be kind," says Gilbert

February 27, 2009

This past Tuesday, I had the opportunity to listen to Elizabeth Gilbert at the Eisemann Center in Richardson, Texas as part of the Arts & Letters Live series hosted by the Dallas Museum of Art. If you haven't already guessed from previous posts, Gilbert is one of my favorite (currently living) authors. Her easy and [...]
